Sunderland and Aston Villa have expressed an interest in signing RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda, who has a €80 million (approximately £70 million) release clause.
According to Sky Sport Germany, after signing Granit Xhaka (32), the Black Cats intend to continue recruiting from the Bundesliga.
On the other side, Villa see Openda (25) as an ideal substitute for Ollie Watkins (29), “who is highly sought after by many clubs.”
According to the aforementioned publication, Openda’s release clause has expired, therefore any club interested in signing him must now negotiate a fee with the Bundesliga club.
Sunderland competes with Aston Villa for RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda
“Newly promoted Premier League side Sunderland are now interested in the Leipzig striker following the transfer of Granit Xhaka,” the site reported, citing journalists Florian Plettenberg and Philipp Hinze.
However, after explaining that the player’s release clause has already expired, Sky Sport journalists wonder whether Openda’s departure this summer is even possible.
The reality is that Leipzig is exceedingly unlikely to allow the Belgian depart during this transfer window, “as both Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko are on the verge of leaving.”
According to TEAMTalk, Sunderland is one of the clubs actively seeking Bayer Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli (25).
As a result, Openda is not the only option Regis Le Bris is contemplating for strengthening their offense in August.

Furthermore, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie revealed that, while the Black Cats are ready to complete their ninth signing of the summer, the club’s board is anticipated to make more additions.
As a result, we should expect more definite information on a potential attacking signing for Sunderland in the coming days.
