How Dejphon Chansiri cost Sheffield Wednesday £1m ‘windfall’ amid Danny Rohl exit

Sheffield Wednesday’s return to the Championship is only seven days away

Questions linger about whether the Owls players may strike against Leicester City next Sunday after their wages were apparently not paid on time again in July.

Barry Bannan has signed a new deal at Hillsborough, providing some relief from the gloom that has plagued the club in recent months. However, South Yorkshire is short in senior depth.

Henrik Pedersen has taken over as manager of Sheffield Wednesday following Danny Rohl’s departure last Tuesday, but a fresh aspect in that departure has emerged that will add to the aggravation.

Sheffield Wednesday missed out on a compensation package for Danny Rohl

The former Owls boss appeared bound to leave the club this summer, albeit the timing may have surprised some.

Nonetheless, Alan Nixon has stated that Wednesday missed out on compensation for Rohl due to interest from a club in his native Germany.

He stated: “Sheffield Wednesday missed out on a windfall from Danny Rohl weeks before his dismissal.

“Wolfsburg, a German club, was interested in the coach and offered him a compensation package worth about £1 million.

“However, owner Dejphon Chansiri wanted the full figure in his contract and that was more than double the sum.”

The Owls are in severe need of money

This summer has been a nightmare for Sheffield Wednesday fans, with key players leaving the club amid uncertainty over its future.

The Owls did not expect any more players to depart; nevertheless, Max Lowe has given in his notice and will be free to leave later this month.

However, if Wednesday is to survive in the medium term, an injection of cash is required, with Chansiri requiring approximately £2.3 million every month to keep the club viable.

As a result, the money that would have been generated by Rohl’s move to Wolfsburg would have been critical, and the Owls are now back at square one.
