Marc Guiu’s journey to the North East was postponed, but his Chelsea loan move to Sunderland is still on.
Sunderland’s loan transfer for Chelsea attacker Marc Guiu has been delayed somewhat as the 19-year-old’s planned flight to the North East was rescheduled for Sunday.
According to Sky Sports News’ Keith Downie, the setback does not put the agreement in peril. An agreement between the two Premier League clubs remains in place, and the season-long loan is expected to be fulfilled.
Guiu was scheduled to arrive for a medical on Monday, but that date has yet to be confirmed as Sunderland waits for the forward to fly. The Spaniard, a previous Club World Cup champion, joined Chelsea from Barcelona for £5 million last summer and has impressed in limited first-team appearances, scoring six goals in seven Europa Conference League games last season.

Downie’s precise tweet reads: A little update: “Guiu’s trip was postponed today, but that doesn’t mean the agreement is dead. The agreement is still in place, and it is expected that the striker will join Sunderland on loan for the season.
If all goes as planned, Guiu will be Régis Le Bris’ latest summer addition, adding competition to Sunderland’s forward line ahead of their Premier League debut against West Ham United on August 16 at the Stadium of Light.
Chelsea activated a £5 million release clause to buy Guiu from his boyhood club Barcelona in 2024. He has subsequently made 16 senior appearances for the London club, including seven in the Europa Conference League, where he scored six goals.
Régis Le Bris assesses Sunderland’s pre-season performance
Sunderland have not won since their first pre-season game against South Shields, but Le Bris is delighted with his team’s progress. “I’m not too worried, we lost the last five games of the Championship season but we understood why,” Le Bris told the crowd.
After the game, Le Bris told the reporters at the Stadium of Light: “It’s not the same scenario, but we’re building a new squad; the quality is there, so it’s just a matter of adding new building blocks.” We can sense that the vibe is different.
Xhaka gave a terrific performance at the base of midfield, and Le Bris reaffirmed that he will most likely be captain for the forthcoming season.
Le Bris stated, “We need maturity, level, consistency, and experience, and he provides it everything. You can tell that for those around him, it makes life easier. It is quite beneficial for the Premier League to have two or three players of this caliber. He’ll probably be captain, certainly.”
Le Bris also applauded goalie Robin Roefs, who gave an excellent effort. Le Bris stated, “Robin has this skill; he has composure on the ball. He’s a good goalie; he looked great this afternoon.”
