Tommy Conway is ready to ‘step up’ at Middlesbrough as Birmingham City lead huge transfer battle

Tommy Conway is ready to ‘step up’ at Middlesbrough as Birmingham City lead huge transfer battle

Middlesbrough are not as far ahead as they need to be in their preparations for the 2025/26 Championship campaign.

While Callum Brittain is set to join Boro, Rob Edwards has officially made just two signings so far this summer with his first competitive game in charge of the Teessiders booked in for Saturday afternoon.

Swansea City make their way to the Riverside Stadium, a club who have been transformed in recent months with Luka Modric now a minority shareholder of the South Wales outfit alongside Snoop Dogg.

Middlesbrough joined the race for Chuba Akpom on Sunday, but it looks as though they have failed in their attempts to sign the striker who is now set for Birmingham City, as per Ben Jacobs – leaving Tommy Conway with a huge amount of responsibility.

Tommy Conway opens up on the pressure on him at Middlesbrough this season

With Akpom seemingly on his way to Blues, Boro are lacking depth in the forward positions and Conway will be leading the line from Saturday onwards.

Tommy Conway scores from the penalty spot and celebrates during the Sky Bet Championship match between Middlesbrough and Plymouth Argyle at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough, England, on April 18, 2025.

He scored 13 goals in the Championship last season, but he will need to improve on this if Middlesbrough are to earn a top six finish. Nevertheless, the 22-year-old appears ready for the challenge ahead.

He said (via: Teesside Live): “I love that. I embrace it. I was speaking to one of my good friends, Andy King, about a similar thing the other day. He said that now he’s retired, he misses the thrill and the pressure of being expected to deliver. He misses having to live up to that.

“I feel like that really hit home for me. When I went away from that chat with him, I was thinking, ‘Yeah, this is why I’m here. This is what I want’. When I’m retired, I’ll miss this, so I’m going to step up and thrive on that.

“I’ve felt a different sort of player this summer really. It’s been chest puffed out, I’m ready to do the job and lead the line for Boro. Hopefully, I can make a good job of that in the season.”

Tommy Conway needs to take his game further in 2025/26

It’s been a frustrating summer for supporters, but they know they do have a quality striker in the form of Conway playing for them. However, Middlesbrough need him to step up his game due to their lack of depth in his position.

While he did reach double figures in his first season at the Riverside, he needs to be even more clinical in 2025/26 and target a 20-goal campaign.

There has been a sense of continuity on Teesside in terms of the squad, despite the changes to the coaching staff, and this will help the players gel quickly once again.

However, competition is the best way to improve performance and Middlesbrough must delve into the transfer market before the window shuts on 1 September.
