Anel Ahmedhodzic opens up on Sheffield United transfer exit amid Champions League hope

Anel Ahmedhodzic speaks up about Sheffield United transfer exit, leaving Blades scrambling

Anel Ahmedhodzic says that the opportunity to play for “a big European club” was a motivating factor in his Sheffield United departure, which was officially confirmed this lunchtime. The 26-year-old defender has signed a four-year contract with Feyenoord, after the Dutch club struck a deal worth roughly £7 million with the Blades.

As previously stated, the deal includes bonuses payable to United if specific conditions are reached, as well as a sell-on provision in case the Bosnian defender leaves in the future. A share of United’s profits will go to Malmo, Ahmedhodzic’s future club.

The departure leaves United even lighter in central defence ahead of this weekend’s season opener against Bristol City, with manager Ruben Selles already looking for reinforcements in that position. That will now be even more of a priority for the incoming Blades manager.

While he grapples with that quandary, Ahmedhodzic is in Rotterdam preparing for a possible debut in his new club’s Champions League qualifying match against Fenerbahçe tomorrow, with the Dutch FA assisting.

“Things have moved incredibly quickly in the last few days,” said Ahmedhodzic, who has been on Feyenoord’s radar for a while. “I could not be happier. I’ve always aspired to play for a large European club.

“I’m grateful to Feyenoord for giving me this opportunity, and they’ve done everything they can to get me eligible to play against Fenerbahçe.” I can’t wait to put on this shirt and give my all with my new comrades. “Here’s to many wonderful things to come.”
