Oldham Athletic Bow Out of Carabao Cup After Accrington Loss
Oldham Athletic’s Carabao Cup campaign was brought to an abrupt end after a 3-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium, in what Micky Mellon described as a disappointing performance that lacked the qualities seen in their league opener.
Just days after a morale-boosting draw against promotion favourites MK Dons, there was optimism around the Latics camp heading into the preliminary round fixture. But that optimism quickly faded as Mellon’s side endured a chastening first half, conceding three goals before the break.
Speaking after the defeat, Mellon pulled no punches in his assessment: “We showed on Saturday at MK Dons that we can be organised, aggressive and difficult to play against. Tonight, we just didn’t bring that with us. It’s disappointing, because the standards have already been set.”
Accrington took full advantage of Oldham’s early sluggishness, punishing a series of defensive lapses to race into a commanding lead by half-time. Stanley’s quick attacking transitions repeatedly exposed the Latics’ backline, with Mellon later admitting his team “never really got going.”
Despite a better showing after the interval, the damage was already done. Reagan Ogle’s deflected strike midway through the second half – his first goal for Oldham – offered a glimmer of hope against his former club, but it proved to be no more than a consolation.
“The second half was better,” Mellon reflected. “We asked for a reaction, and I did see more fight, more energy, and more purpose in our play. But when you give yourself a mountain to climb like we did, it’s very difficult at this level.”
The result marked a premature end to Oldham’s Carabao Cup journey for another year and served as a reality check following their encouraging start to the National League season.
Mellon, however, remained determined to take lessons from the defeat rather than dwell on the disappointment. “These early-season cup games are tough, especially when you’re trying to build rhythm and cohesion. It’s still early days, and we’re learning all the time about what we can do better.”
He also hinted at possible changes ahead of the weekend fixture, as attention now turns back to the league campaign. “There were some performances tonight that will give us things to think about going into Saturday. We’ll go back to the training ground, regroup, and make sure we respond the right way.”
For the fans who travelled to Lancashire, it was a frustrating evening, but the signs of progress under Mellon remain – particularly if the team can find consistency and rediscover the resilience they showed against MK Dons.
As Oldham prepare for their next league outing, Mellon and his staff will hope this cup disappointment serves as motivation to sharpen performances and avoid similar first-half collapses.
While their Carabao Cup adventure may be over, the Latics still have much to play for – and plenty to prove – as the season unfolds.
