‘What’s brilliant’ – Rob Edwards on Middlesbrough transfer work with Kieran Scott and Chris Jones
Rob Edwards details Middlesbrough’s recruitment work and how it all works
Rob Edwards has detailed Middlesbrough’s recruitment process, praising the work of Kieran Scott and head of recruitment Chris Jones on player identification.
The summer has not proven an easy one for Boro so far but they made a crucial breakthrough this week in securing top target Callum Brittain. The former Blackburn Rovers man has been one of the top right-backs in the Championship in recent years, with Boro needing to strengthen that area.
But in an effort to be a more self-sustainable club, Scott and Co have been tasked with finding players who represent better value for money, and, if needs be, with future sell-on value too. In this sense, they’ve had numerous successes as the club try to reduce their astronomical losses in recent years.
Edwards, of course, had prior relationships with Scott and Jones having worked with both at Wolves previously. Asked about recruitment at Boro, how it works, and how he’s finding it so far, he was keen to praise the pair in light of increased attention amd scrutiny on the club’s transfer business.
Edwards said: “We work together. What’s brilliant here is that there is real clarity in how it works with Kieran [Scott] and Jonesy [Chris Jones] who both work incredibly hard. They’ve got a really wide range of players and countries that we’re looking at. It gives us real in-depth lists that we can then whittle down before they show us.
“We can then work together to try and narrow it down to the exact targets that we want. That’s what we’ve done. But a lot of this work was already going on before we even arrived. They’d already done so much of it. We arrived and the plan was presented to us.
“They’re really good at what they do. There’s been times where we sit and have the conversations and I’ll bring a name up of a player I’m aware of. I’ll say, ‘I really like him’, and they already know everything about him. I’m yet to tell them about anyone they don’t already know.”
Meanwhile, offering insight into policy, and the kind of player that Boro are looking at this summer, Edwards offered an interesting clue on what might be expected in the remainder of the window. Boro continue to try and progress more deals to add to the three they’ve already completed.
Edwards said: “What we’re trying to do with recruitment is bring people in that can play a couple of different positions. If you have that versatility, it allows us to change either in-game or for different opposition.
