‘Ready to act’ – Rovers prepared for all transfer eventualities, says McCann

Grant McCann has reassured Doncaster Rovers fans that the club are “ready to act” should an unexpected event occur before the transfer window shuts.

The summer window ends for operations on September 1. While other clubs are still looking for new players, Rovers have already made their move. Nine additional entrants have been sanctioned, with eight of them arriving before June 30.
It has given McCann plenty of time to instill his ideas and techniques in the new group, and the new-look club got off to a strong start last weekend, defeating Exeter City 1-0 in the curtain-raiser.

McCann understands, however, that even the best-laid plans can suddenly fall apart, and he is determined to ensure Rovers are prepared for any eventuality.
“We’re really pleased where we are at this moment in time (with our squad) but I know what happens and can happen in these windows,” McCann told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “You’re pleased, and then something happens, whether it’s an injury, someone wants to go, or a club likes one of your players and signs him.

“So my mind is open to all those sort of things happening and it means you have to be ready to act – which we are.”

The Northern Irishman was also asked how essential a player’s personality is when considering a signing, regardless of technical skill. When asked if he has ever cancelled a transfer due to a negative feeling about a player, he said, “Many times. That is why it is always critical to have a strong character reference; his ability may be exceptional, but the character may not be what you are looking for.

“Then it’s always crucial for me to go meet the player to ensure he wants to come to you. I’d never sign a guy if we were pushing it and he wasn’t committed. I would simply walk away from the deal.

“That the player wants to come is really important to me in terms of recruitment. I’d never threaten or persuade a player to come here if they didn’t want to.

Rovers travel to Mansfield Town on Saturday.
