Started Discussions – Sunderland Face Marseille Competition For Target
Sunderland have made promising moves in the summer transfer window under new manager Régis Le Bris, but their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen attacker Amine Adli is under growing threat, with French giants Olympique Marseille entering the race and beginning formal discussions to secure his signature.
The Black Cats, who are preparing for a tough Championship campaign, have been actively strengthening their squad with a clear blend of youth and experience. So far this summer, Sunderland have welcomed seasoned midfielder Granit Xhaka and Premier League winger Simon Adingra, both of whom are expected to play key roles in Le Bris’ system.
Despite these additions, the Wearside outfit remains focused on reinforcing their attacking options. The need for added firepower is no secret – Sunderland struggled for consistency in front of goal last season, and if they are to mount a serious challenge for promotion or at least remain competitive, more goals will be crucial.
One name that has emerged as a key target is Amine Adli, the versatile Moroccan forward currently on the books of Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen. At 25, Adli brings top-flight pedigree, having featured in both the Bundesliga and European competitions. Known for his technical skill, pace, and ability to operate across the frontline, he fits the profile of a modern, dynamic attacker that Le Bris admires.
However, Adli endured an injury-ridden 2024/25 campaign, which limited his appearances and affected his momentum. That dip in form, coupled with Leverkusen’s need to reshape their squad, has opened the door for a potential move – and Sunderland were quick to explore the opportunity.
But their hopes have been complicated by emerging competition from Ligue 1. According to respected French sports daily *L’Équipe*, Marseille have now opened talks with Leverkusen regarding a move for Adli. The Stade Vélodrome club are seeking to inject flair and depth into their forward line and see Adli as a valuable addition.
With Marseille’s reputation, European pedigree, and the allure of returning to France – where Adli previously played for Toulouse – Sunderland’s path to landing the attacker has suddenly become much steeper. The French club are said to be serious in their intentions and have already initiated negotiations, which puts pressure on the Black Cats to act swiftly if they are to stay in the race.
Régis Le Bris, who himself has deep knowledge of French football, will be aware of the appeal Marseille holds for a player like Adli. However, Sunderland remain hopeful that their long-term project, the promise of regular football, and the chance to lead a resurgent English club could prove persuasive.
In addition to Adli, Sunderland continue to monitor Fiorentina’s young centre-back Pietro Comuzzo and Borussia Dortmund full-back Julian Ryerson as they seek to bolster both ends of the pitch.
With just weeks left in the window, Sunderland’s recruitment drive is far from over – but if they are to beat Marseille to Adli, they’ll need to move
quickly and decisively.
