Exclusive: Lee Hendrie predicts the AFC score for Southampton vs. Wrexham
Both teams enter this opening-day match with high hopes for the next season because Southampton is a Premier League team and Wrexham was only in League One three months ago.
Southampton’s new manager Will Still will be in charge of his first competitive game as the Saints’ manager at the upcoming midday kickoff, which will take place at St Mary’s Stadium. Still will be aiming for a successful start to his tenure in the dugout. The former Reims manager is adamant that his team send a signal of purpose to competitors for promotion, particularly Wrexham, the day’s newly promoted visitors. After a hectic preseason program in Australia, Phil Parkinson’s team travels to the south for Wrexham. They are definitely a team to watch this season after being promoted from the National League to the Championship three times in a row.

“It’s a big game, Southampton vs. Wrexham, some really tasty ones to start the season off,” Hendrie stated in an exclusive interview with FLW. Southampton will be comparatively good this season, in my opinion. Due to the loss of several important players in critical positions, including goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, seasoned right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, and elusive winger Kamaldeen Sulemana, Southampton’s roster will not look quite like the one Saints supporters were accustomed to seeing in the Premier League last season.
The new manager has made good additions to the team despite having departures that will undoubtedly leave a hole in Still’s squad. For example, he paid £7 million to sign 21-year-old Damion Downs from Bundesliga team F.C. Koln and Joshua Quarshie, a defender for TSG Hoffenheim who is expected to play in their match against Wrexham after playing for the Saints during preseason. Parkinson’s team has seen over eight arrivals at the Racecourse Ground, including several well-known players in the attacking third, as Wrexham has also been active throughout the transfer window.
Not to be overlooked are their additions of Kieffer Moore, Ryan Hardie, and Josh Windass, three Championship-proven players, as well as the addition of former Leicester City player Conor Coady to bolster their defence. Some supporters may be concerned about the loss of Paul Mullin, Wrexham’s star player during their three straight promotions, who is on loan at Wigan. Parkinson has laid down a strong framework for the path he wants the football team to go in, even though the Welsh team is expected to find the transfer to tier two difficult. “I think Wrexham will have it all to do,” Hendrie continued. They won’t go there and obtain a result, in my opinion. I’ll give Southampton a 2-1 victory.
