Wrexham suffered ‘massive blow’ in crushing Southampton loss, it is ‘disappointing’ for Phil Parkinson

Following Wrexham’s defeat vs Southampton, the Red Dragons are set to face a ‘disappointing’ absence of one star.

Wrexham lost to Southampton in their Championship opening game, with Josh Windass getting the goal for the Red Dragons.

Wrexham defender Conor Coady also shone at the back for Parkinson’s side in the heart of a back-three.

Unfortunately, Wrexham were dealt a heavy injury blow during the game, one that looks set to be a ‘massive’ hindrance to Parkinson’s plans for the weeks to come.

Injury dealt to Wrexham star Kieffer Moore is a ‘massive blow’ for Phil Parkinson

Wrexham signed Kieffer Moore for £4m from Sheffield United this summer after Phil Parkinson made it clear that he wanted an improved forward line for the season ahead.

Despite enduring a difficult 2024/25 Championship campaign at Bramall Lane, the long-time Wrexham fans were aware of Moore’s capabilities in front of goal after the quality he showed for the Welsh national team throughout his career.

As expected, Moore’s debut in a Wrexham shirt was one to admire, with the forward showing brilliant strength when on the ball, as well as a surprising level of pace after he peeled away from the Southampton defence before he was brought down to win a penalty.

Unfortunately, he then sustained an injury which forced Parkinson into a change, something that proved to be the turning point in the contest.

EFL expert Justin Peach believes that Moore’s injury could be a huge hindrance for Wrexham and Parkinson in the upcoming weeks.

“I think Kieffer Moore going off [was the turning point],” said Peach when speaking on the Second Tier Podcast. “He’s got suspected ankle ligament damage, which is a massive blow.

“Him going off made Wrexham lose that presence up front and then that’s when they retreated. So yeah, it’s a disappointing end, but a positive showing.”

Pressure will be on Ryan Hardie to replicate Kieffer Moore brilliance

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has done well this summer to prioritise bringing in a wealth of options in attack following the loan departure of Paul Mullin and the decision to let Steven Fletcher leave at the end of his contract.

As well as Josh Windass and Kieffer Moore, the latter of which is set to be out of action for the upcoming games, Parkinson also signed Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle.

Hardie is a similar mould of striker to Moore, so it would be expected that he will be the direct replacement for the Welshman.

We know that Hardie has the capabilities of performing at this level, and hopefully Wrexham can show the same promise on the attack as when they had Moore in the opening game vs Southampton.
