Chuba Akpom, a target for Birmingham City, has explained why he chose to sign with Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town over the Blues.

After being linked to Birmingham City, the 29-year-old decided to sign a one-year loan deal with the Tractor Boys, who were fortunate to escape St Andrew’s with a 1-1 draw in Friday night’s season opener.
The striker joined Ajax after having a breakthrough season at Middlesbrough in 2022–2023, and he performed admirably in his debut season with the Amsterdam powerhouses.
Though he made a fleeting appearance in the Champions League, he only managed 14 Ligue 1 appearances, including just six starts, and only three goals during his season-long loan with Lille.
That started a transfer controversy in which Blues allegedly made a £6 million bid and even scheduled a medical for the former Arsenal trainee before Ipswich intervened.
Returning to Boro and Olympiacos was also associated with Akpom. Despite the Blues’ efforts to recruit Akpom permanently, it was revealed last week that his “focus” was on joining Ipswich.
However, he ultimately chose Kieran McKenna’s idea and the opportunity to assist Ipswich in returning to the Premier League at the first opportunity. He will immediately join the team and take on George Hirst in the front.
