Sensible move from Villa as loan exit for depth option confirmed

Aston Villa have confirmed that goalkeeper Joe Gauci has joined Port Vale on a season-long loan deal.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper joined us from Adelaide United in January 2024, but he has only made two senior appearances and has played primarily as a depth option.
After spending time on loan at Barnsley last season, Villa have revealed that the Australian international will spend the forthcoming season on loan at Port Vale, where he hopes to play a key part, acquire experience, and continue to improve and develop his game.

Finally, Villa made a wise decision since Gauci needs to play consistently and continue to prove himself as a long-term option with us, as he struggled to impress in pre-season and sitting on the bench all year would not help him improve.

Instead, a loan to Port Vale will keep him active and help him develop, and perhaps he’ll return next summer as a much-improved player ready to contend for a spot on our goalkeeper depth chart.

After signing Marco Bizot last month, it was expected that an exit would be on the cards, but the Dutchman is currently providing reliable insurance behind Emiliano Martinez and has swiftly established himself as our number two goalkeeper.

As a result, Gauci fell down the pecking order, and with his temporary departure now confirmed, it remains to be seen who will fill the role of third-choice goalkeeper at Villa, with one of our young players potentially promoted or the club looking to add a veteran in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

In any case, this is the best move for both Gauci and Villa’s long-term interests in the Australian ace, so ideally he has a solid stay at Port Vale and the choice is a success.
