When Gillingham hosts AFC Wimbledon at Priestfield in the Carabao Cup, manager Gareth Ainsworth wants the team to keep up their momentum.
In the opening round of the League Cup competition, the Gills play League 1 opponents.
Ainsworth will be playing hard against the Dons in an attempt to maintain his winning streak, which has already reached 11 games in League 2 since he took over Gillingham.
Ainsworth declared, “I want to be strong in this game.”
“In football, momentum is crucial. The last thing you want is to lose a game.
“I’ll be giving it my all because I really don’t want to lose a game on Tuesday.
“On Tuesday, we’ll be powerful. We’ll be aiming for victory.
“Having Wimbledon, a team we are familiar with from the previous season, is good. They are an excellent side.
“I hold them in high regard. It is a club I used to attend, and I am eager to compete against them.
Defensor Conor Masterson (calf) will be absent for several weeks for the Gills, and Aaron Rowe, Seb Palmer-Houlden, and Sam Vokes have yet to play this season.
Ainsworth might rest Bradley Dack, who won the match on Saturday.
Jonny Williams was a perfect replacement who was underutilised on the weekends.
Gareth Ainsworth, has been complimentary of AFC Wimbledon, their forthcoming Carabao Cup opponents, calling them “a very good side” with lots of talent.
Playing with the Dons earlier in his career, Ainsworth acknowledged the unique bond he still has with the team.
Given his past there, he acknowledged that the encounter will have a personal edge, but he emphasised that his primary goal is to assist Gillingham in maintaining their impressive momentum.
He said that he enjoys the challenge of putting himself to the test tactically against his old team, saying, “It’s always nice to come up against them.”
Ainsworth predicted a challenging and exciting match and commended Wimbledon’s organisation and competitive spirit.
Additionally, he emphasised that these games give his players a chance to demonstrate their abilities against formidable opposition, highlighting the significance of consistency and excellent play in both league and cup competitions.
