Charlton Athletic chief drops Birmingham City and Wrexham opinion in transfer update

In the transfer update, the Charlton Athletics chief expresses opinions about Birmingham City and Wrexham.

Jim Rodwell, the managing director of Charlton Athletic, gave an update on Addicks’ transfers this week and commended the efforts of Championship rivals Birmingham City and Wrexham.
Last weekend’s thrilling late victory against Watford at The Valley marked the beginning of Nathan Jones’ team’s comeback to the second division. Harvey Knibbs, who joined the team from League One team Reading, scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute after coming off the bench. Despite not spending as much on transfers as other Championship teams, the Addicks have been extremely active during the transfer season. Arriving on free transfers from Blackpool and Luton Town are Sonny Carey and Amari’i Bell. Rob Apter, Tanto Olaofe, Thomas Kaminski, Joe Rankin-Costello, and Knibbs have all been signed for salaries of at least £2 million.

Charlie Kelman from QPR was the most costly purchase, costing an estimated £3.5 million, with the possibility of that amount increasing to £5 million. For an undisclosed fee, Luton Town’s Reece Burke has also joined the team. Wrexham and Birmingham City, two other promoted teams, have spent more money in the interim. Wrexham spent at least £2 million on each player Kieffer Moore, Conor Coady, Liberato Cacace, and Lewis O’Brien, while the Blues reportedly spent £10 million on Rennes attacker Kyogo Furuhashi alone.

“The first thing that we’ve got to do is be competitive week in and week out and see where that takes you,” Charlton Athletic managing director Jim Rodwell stated in an interview with talkSPORT on Monday. We obviously want to remain in the division, but I believe we have slightly higher goals in mind. Although there may be setbacks along the way, the players establish their own goals for what they believe they can accomplish this season. They have a positive outlook on our performance. We believe we can compete with anyone if given a fair chance, even with injuries and other issues.
