Conor Hourihane is eager for Jon Russell to prove himself when they play Fleetwood Town at home on Wednesday.
All things considered, the League Cup first round provides a chance for players to make up for lost playing time and for others to relax.
Jack Shepherd will make his comeback following a red card against Plymouth Argyle and a ban against Burton Albion, while Neil Farrugia will play his first game of the season following an injury.
After playing as a substitute in both of those victories, seasoned midfielder Jon Russell is expected to play a bigger part.
“Jon will play on Wednesday,” Hourihane said. “He will undoubtedly be among the players who are a little let down.
“I chose not to use him in the first few games in favour of other players, but it doesn’t mean he won’t play again soon or in the future. “I’ll be looking forward to that because he’ll undoubtedly be one champing at the bit and putting in a performance to go, ‘This is why you shouldn’t leave me out.’…”
“There is no doubt that Neil will play a part. It was simply a minor injury.

“I need to put Neil in a position where he can consistently participate in squads and team selections and grow a little bit stronger. Neil needs us to get him there right now, and he will undoubtedly be participating on Wednesday.”
The victor advances to round two at the end of August, when the Premier League clubs that are not competing in Europe join in.
The match will be decided on the night. Hourihane will strive to strike a balance between sharing workloads for players like 37-year-old David McGoldrick and encouraging his club to develop a winning habit.
“We’re not blessed with huge numbers, so that’s going to be the case but there will be shared minutes to try and not kind of flog the lads too much before the Bolton game (in League One on Saturday).”
