Carabao Cup: MK Dons 0-2 Bristol City
Championship Bristol City defeated MK Dons on Tuesday night, securing a safe passage into the second round of the Carabao Cup with goals in each half.
After six minutes, former Dons player Scott Twine set up Jason Knight to run home, and an hour later, he picked out Yu Hirakawa to lash in the game-winning second
Although the odds were always stacked against the visitors due to the two divisions between the teams, the goals were the first given up under Paul Warne’s leadership since he took over in April
From an MK Dons standpoint, there wasn’t much riding on the match, so Paul Warne used it as a chance to start some of his players who hadn’t had much of a chance to play in the league.
He made nine changes to the team, including the return of Nathan Thompson and Scott Hogan from injury.
Dan Crowley was also included in the replacements after he recovered from a problem that had kept him out since the previous season. Will Collar and Marvin Ekpiteta both made their debut starts for the team
After their convincing 4-1 victory against Sheffield United on Saturday, Gerhard Struber made five changes to his team, including former Dons top scorer Scott Twine, who contributed to City’s early lead after only six minutes when he clipped a corner that allowed Jason Knight to loop a header past Connal Trueman.
When the hosts rushed forward in an attempt to end the game as soon as possible, it looked like it would open the floodgates, but Dons got their bearings and started to keep them back.
One of the two players to remain in the starting lineup from Saturday’s victory over Barrow, Russian Hepburn-Murphy was Dons’ best outlet throughout the first half and twice helped create opportunities for Collar.
In the first, he headed barely over the bar after deflecting Liam Kelly’s shot just wide of the mark.
At the other end, the well-marshalled defence of Ekpiteta, Thompson, and youthful Charlie Waller kept Trueman comparatively trouble-free despite their ability to generate chances at the drop of a hat.
Particularly in the first ten minutes, when the Robins attempted to end the match early with a second goal, the second half would follow a similar pattern to the first.
In the end, they would have to wait until the hour mark to receive it, and substitute Yu Hirakawa delivered it elegantly, curling into the top corner.
Three to ten minutes later, Knight attempted a long-range shot but had it bounce off the bar
Although Dons didn’t really threaten a late comeback due to a lack of opportunities, substitute Callum Patterson and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans had an opportunity to rally, but it was unsuccessful
