Sheffield Wednesday urged to seal “great” £0 deal for ex-Leeds United star

Sheffield Wednesday have made an offer to former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper in order to improve their first-team squad.

According to The Guardian, the former Leeds United player is a prospective signing for the Owls.

The Yorkshire Post stated that the club’s transfer ban was lifted last week, allowing them to add fresh players to Henrik Pedersen’s squad.

Cooper, 33, is now without a team after leaving CSKA Sofia on mutual consent in late July, less than a year after signing with the Bulgarian giants.

Sheffield Wednesday granted Liam Cooper’s transfer request

When asked about Cooper’s potential signing, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna said it would be a very welcome addition to the team.

He feels the defender will provide much-needed experience to an otherwise youthful club, and he hopes an agreement can be reached for the upcoming season.

“When I think of Liam Cooper, one thing that stands out is his experience, which is something we really need this season,” McKenna told Football League World.

“With so many players leaving, there isn’t a lot of experience on the club, so we’ll be bringing in some new guys to play in those places on defense.

“So having someone like Cooper, who has played in the Championship for years and has the experience, I believe would be a terrific signing.

“He understands the division inside and out, and despite his age of 33, he could be a good short-term signing.

“He may not be first-choice for many teams, and we would not have gone for players like Cooper in previous summers, but I think if we got him now, it would be amazing, and his experience would be extremely beneficial to the team.

“It would relieve some of the pressure on someone like Bannan, so I’d be surprised if we did get him, and it’s a much better signing than I thought we’d be able to get given the horrendous circumstances and all the fee reductions and embargoes.”

“So this is one I would really like to see, and it would be a really good signing if he did decide to come to Hillsborough.”

Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-1 away to Leicester City in their season opener on Sunday.

Cooper’s arrival would be great business for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday will need to bring in some players while they can, as they have lost so many over the summer.

Cooper isn’t the ideal addition in normal circumstances, but he could be exactly what they need right now.

The defender has years of Championship experience, having played over 200 games at the second level, and understands what it takes to compete at the highest level after assisting Leeds United achieve their promotion to the Premier League in 2020.

While he is unlikely to be able to play every game at this point in his career, he might be a significant addition to the games in which he is able to participate, and the Owls need as many leaders in the dressing room as they can get right now.

Cooper would undoubtedly be one of those, having demonstrated his ability as a competent centre-back in both the Championship and the Premier League in recent years.
