A citizen believes a Bolton Wanderers legend deserves to be remembered on a sporting monument in the borough. Michael Holt, 83, of Westhoughton, believes the late Wyn Davies deserves to be commemorated on the Spirit of Sport structure near the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
The Spirit of Sport honours 700 persons, with each tile depicting someone who has made a contribution to Bolton sport. Mr Holt stated: “He would love to be added to the Spirit of Sport, but he was a really humble man. The eye-catching landmark features 700 people. “He was such a nice guy, and I think he deserves some respect. “I used to see him in the gym and he’d often stop by for a talk, or I’d run into him at Bolton Market. “I wasn’t particularly close to him but for nearly two decades I’d have the odd chat to him, and you could just tell he was a great bloke.” (Image: NQ.) Wyn Davies died in July of this year. Mr Holt noted that Davies arrived in Bolton to fill Nat Lofthouse’s shoes, a seemingly impossible mission that he believes Davies performed admirably.
Davies, dubbed ‘Wyn the Leap’ due to his exceptional aerial skills, scored 74 goals in 170 appearances with the Whites from 1962 to 1966. During the 1964/65 season, he scored 25 goals in 38 Second Division games before joining Newcastle United for a club record fee and winning the Fairs Cup in 1969. Davies went on to join a select club of players who have worn both the red shirt of Manchester United and the blue shirt of Manchester City, spending time at both. He also earned 34 caps for Wales, 16 of which came while on Bolton’s roster.
