Birmingham City chairman Tom Wagner lauded the players after Chris Davies’ side beat Sheffield United to reach the second round of the EFL Cup.
In actuality, Davies picked a good team against their fellow promotion contenders, and the Yorkshire team should have won by a much greater margin. The Yorkshire team was only saved from defeat by sloppy finishing.
Before being substituted by game-winning Stansfield, Kyogo was virtually everywhere. He had several chances to increase his total, most notably failing to convert a one-on-one against Blades’ goalkeeper Davies after sprinting through on goal.
But after Kyogo’s first goal was cancelled out by Hamer’s goal from the halfway line, the home team kept up the pressure, and Stansfield’s deflected shot in the 87th minute earned them a spot in the next round.
Birmingham City wants to gain more traction as they aim for promotion.
The primary goal is obviously promotion to the Premier League, but even if he didn’t make as many changes against the Blades as some had anticipated, Davies will have an opportunity to give players playing time because he has a large, quality squad at his disposal.
