Sheffield United’s Djibril Soumare was a ‘bright spark’ against Birmingham City, says The Star reporter Danny Hall.
Sheffield United lost 2-1 to the Blues in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Gus Hamer scored for SUFC.

On the first day of the season, the Blades fell 4-1 at home against Bristol City. That means they’ve lost their last two games in a row across all competitions.
Journalist Hall has provided his assessment on new guy Soumare after Wednesday night’s tie, according to The Star:
“Some much-needed minutes for the Senegalese midfielder as he made his debut for the Blades, having had little by way of a pre-season campaign and looking to adjust quickly to the pace and physicality of English football. And the United faithful behind the goal will have liked what they saw from the new boy from his early involvement, using every inch of his 6ft 2in frame to repel attacks in the air and then spreading the ball nicely to (Ehije) Ukaki out on the right.
“But his real specialism seems to be defensively and he did superbly to dispossess (Willum) Willumsson as he bore down on the United box before he inevitably ran out of gas and was replaced as part of a second-half triple change – as without doubt the bright spark of a miserable afternoon for the Blades.”
Sheffield United latest regarding Djibril Soumare
Sheffield United recruited Soumare to improve their midfield department. SUFC have signed him on loan from SC Braga to fill the vacuum left by Vini Souza’s departure.
He’s under contract with his parent club until the summer of 2028. He was loaned to Madeira-based team Nacional last year to gain vital experience.

The Dakar-born player has been at SC Braga since 2021, when he signed a temporary contract that was later made permanent. He has made two first-team appearances for the Portuguese club so far.
What now for Sheffield United?
Sheffield United return to Championship play this weekend in the league, hoping to turn their fortunes around. SUFC will play Swansea City away.
After Hull City fired Ruben Selles, the Blades hired him as head coach in June. He was chosen as a successor for Chris Wilder, who was fired following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland.
Selles has an opportunity to bring in some new faces before the window closes. He also has the option of allowing some players to go before the deadline of Monday, September 1st.
