Sheffield United have made an £8m bid for Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas as they look to replace Anel Ahmedhodzic, according to reporter Pete O’Rourke.
Sheffield United will enter the 2025/26 season with several spots still in need of strengthening. Under Ruben Selles, the Blades are determined to return to the Premier League as soon as possible, but that goal is dependent on solid transfer market support.
Their Championship campaign began with a brutal 4-1 defeat to Bristol City, followed by a Carabao Cup exit to Birmingham City on Tuesday night. Gustavo Hamer’s magnificent halfway-line strike briefly revived hopes, but Jay Stansfield’s late winner clinched a 2-1 loss.
So far this summer, SUFC’s big arrivals have been loanees Louie Barry and Djibril Soumare. With Vini Souza and Anel Ahmedhodzic both sold, finances are now available, and Sheffield United is ready to spend them.
According to Pete O’Rourke of X, SUFC has made a substantial bid for Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas. The bid for the 24-year-old centre defender is £8 million.
Thomas has been a crucial player for Coventry City since coming from Burnley two years ago. He joined the Sky Blues for roughly £2 million and may be sold for a large profit if the proposal is accepted.
He is the second Championship player Sheffield United has bid for in recent weeks. SUFC had previously made an offer to Hull City for Charlie Hughes, but have since moved on to Thomas.
A defender at last for Sheffield United
Sheffield United has battled at the back in the first few weeks of the season. Ahmedhodzic’s departure has created a vacuum in the midst of the SUFC defensive four.
Rhys Norrington-Davies started as centre-back against Bristol City on the opening day, alongside summer acquisition Tyler Bindon. Jack Robinson returned to the side in midweek but only lasted an hour.
Thomas would be an ideal addition to the backline. If Sheffield United can reach an agreement with Coventry City, it would be a major signing for the Blades.

A huge two weeks ahead for Sheffield United

If Thomas comes in, it will be a fantastic start to the final two weeks of the summer window. However, the Blades have a lot more to do.
SUFC has lost about ten first-team players, including those on loan from previous year. Only five players have been added thus far, making Selles’ team substantially weaker than previous year.
If Sheffield United are to compete for the play-offs, they will need to make several more additions. If they want Selles, the new boss, to succeed, they will have to spend money.
