Sheffield United submit blockbuster £8m bid for Coventry City defender

Sheffield United have launched a massive bid for Coventry City centre-back Bobby Thomas as they aim to strengthen their defence following Anel Ahmedhodzic’s move to Dutch giants Feyenoord.

The Bosnian recently left Bramall Lane after agreeing a £7 million deal with Rotterdam, but the Blades’ incoming transfer progress has been poor, with only three loanees joining this summer, along with youthful duo Ehije Ukaki and Mihail Polendakov.

Fans have grown frustrated with owners COH Sports’ lack of backing in the summer transfer window, as has head coach Ruben Selles, but they are now looking to move – and potentially in a big manner.

Sheffield United make an offer for Coventry City defender Bobby Thomas

Sheffield United are keen for at least one new defender after conceding four goals at home to Bristol City on the first weekend of the season, and Hull City’s Charlie Hughes has just come under their notice.

The Blades did not bid for Hughes, but divisional rivals Coventry did, with a £7 million offer turned down for the former Wigan player, according to Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, has shifted its focus to a new target, Coventry’s first-choice defender, in a surprising move.

According to Pete O’Rourke, Bobby Thomas is now United’s key defensive target, and the club has bid a whopping £8 million for him.

Thomas, who signed from Burnley in 2023 for about £2 million, has been a fixture for Cov in the last two Championship seasons, making 84 appearances in total.

It remains to be seen whether United can reach an agreement, but they are now seeking to spend money after a summer of minimal activity in the incoming phase.

Bobby Thomas’ contract status at Coventry City, as Sheffield United interest surfaces

Thomas signed a four-year contract with Coventry when he first arrived at the CBS Arena two years ago, so he still has just under two years left on his contract.

It means that Coventry, who clearly want a new centre-back, will be under no compulsion to sell for anything less than Thomas’ assessment, given their desire to expand in that area.

Thomas is a threat in both boxes, as evidenced by his average of 3.4 aerial duels won per Championship game last season, 5.6 clearances per game, and five goals at the other end of the pitch. It’s easy to see why United is making him a top target.
