Fitness boost for Oldham Athletic’s Jake Caprice and Harry Charsley

Jake Caprice and Harry Charsley have stepped up their comeback trail, but there are question marks over Ryan Woods’ availability for the visit of Swindon Town at Boundary Park.

Latics midfielder Woods was injured in a tackle during last weekend’s 1-1 draw at home to Colchester United and had to be replaced at half-time.

And while the knock is not considered a long-term problem, it did cause him to miss full training in the early part of the week.

“I thought it was a shocking challenge,” said manager Micky Mellon.

“I don’t think anybody goes in maliciously to try to hurt anybody, I think it’s just fully committed but it was reckless and out of control and could have been more serious than it was.

“He’s been struggling. He got a sore one and he missed some training so we’ll wait and see how that goes.

“But whoever we put out there they were brought here to play first team football for Oldham and they’ll be expected to go out and put a shift in.”

There has been some positive news on the injury front for long-term absentees Caprice, who suffered a hamstring tear at York City on Easter Monday, and Charsley, who missed most of last season with a hip problem.

“Caprice is back in and among us but not ready to be selected,” said Mellon. “Harry Charsley is probably in the same place, in and among us but not match ready yet so maybe a bit more time in and among us with intensity and building things up.”

Mellon has also recently been without Tom Pett, Jake Leake, Kai Payne and Jack Stevens.

“The rest of the lads have just probably ticked another week off and they’re probably another couple of weeks from coming back,” Mellon added.

“But it’s nothing that we’re not in control of at the minute. We’ll keep going.”
