Q&A: McNeil Previews Leeds Test & Reflects On Injury Recovery

Dwight McNeil talks about Everton’s first Premier League game against Leeds United, his reflections on his 2024–2025 injury setbacks, and his experience playing against AS Roma at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

We’ll begin with you and your preseason, Dwight. Have you had a good summer?

It’s been going well. After yet another preseason, all eyes will be on the season’s opening match.

And for me, was it an opportunity to unwind? Could you turn off?

Yes, I believe I was able to decompress after the previous season, particularly because I had a challenging season. I believe it was crucial for me to simply turn off.

I think it’s difficult. Even though I knew I was wrong, I continued to play. I may have even made it worse. After consulting with various specialists and other experts, they indicated it might be this or that. Eventually, I had another scan, and they concluded it was my ITB. Therefore, it only required surgery.

The unknown—people not knowing what was wrong with me—was probably the worst thing for me. However, I was content to finish it and get in shape.
