‘Absolutely furious’ – Wycombe boss gives verdict on Rovers draw

Doncaster Rovers stay undefeated as they adjust to life back in League One.

Wycombe Wanderers held Grant McCann’s side to a 1-1 draw, with Billy Sharp’s fortunate opener cancelled out by a goal from Wycombe substitute Junior Quitirna. Sharp scored a giftwrapped goal just before the hour following a defensive error by the visitors’ goalkeeper Mikki van Sas, but Quitirna saved his colleague’s blushes. That was enough for the Chairboys to earn their first point of the season – not that manager Mike Dodds was pleased. Far from it, in fact.

“I’m absolutely furious,” he stated after the contest. “I did not like our personality. We’re going to play poorly at times, which I can live with, but I can’t live with the energy levels – it felt like Doncaster hit practically every second ball.

“I’ve made it clear to them that I’ve issued a warning shot on some of the performances. I rarely do this, but I’d like to apologize to the travelling fans because it was nowhere near the level that we expected.

“There wasn’t the courage to take the ball. I felt we were semi-organised out of possession, and their (Doncaster’s) opportunities came from our poor play. I simply told the group that our performance was exactly what I didn’t want it to be.

“The positives are our subs came on and impacted the game and we got a point by not playing particularly well.” Dodds feels Rovers’ goal, which came after Wycombe overplayed it out from the back, is a byproduct of his team’s style of play.

He went on to say, “We wanted to modify the way we played, which is why we recruited Mikki. He’ll take some of the responsibility, and the goal pretty well sums up our day. We were way too sluggish. It’s not a good goal, but I’ll say that’s how we’ll play, and I’ll defend Mikki.”
