Oldham Athletic ‘lacked quality’ in defeat to Swindon Town

Oldham Athletic boss Micky Mellon said that his side were greatly lacking in quality to get something from Swindon Town.

From that point, the home side managed to re-establish themselves, and Joe Quigley headed home from a wide free kick, the sixth time Swindon have conceded from a set piece already this season.

However, despite causing a few nervous moments, The Latics never properly troubled Connor Ripley’s goal, and Town were able to hold out and make it back-to-back league wins.

Mellon was very frustrated with how his player started the game, and then how they were found lacking when they had to find a goal.

Speaking to club media after the game, he said: “I thought we started the game really poorly, not doing what we needed to do in the first 17 minutes. We were not winning enough contacts or enough knockdowns.

“We were not doing the jobs that we need people to do, in order for us to have done better in those first 17 minutes.

“People were coming off what we needed them to do right the way through the team. It was way off from what we needed to be.

“That was disappointing. We gave ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb, and then we got a goal and were a little bit huffy-puffy.

“In the second half, we were a little bit better, but when the moments come and you need to show a bit of quality, we were lacking in that far too much.

“There were too many times when you thought, ‘Go on, show me what you have got there! Show me a better cross, show me a bit of hold up, show me a header!’

“We never showed anywhere near enough quality at those times which would have been needed to get us something from the game. We are really disappointed.”
