New club for ex-Sheffield Wednesday stalwart confirmed following Huddersfield Town release

Tom Lees, a former Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday defender, has found a new club after leaving Huddersfield Town

The 34-year-old is well-known throughout Yorkshire, having started his career in Leeds’ academy system. He went on to make 135 senior appearances with the Whites, before leaving for Wednesday in 2014.

Lees made 274 appearances over the course of seven years before moving to Huddersfield in 2021. After 155 Terriers appearances, the veteran centre-back was dismissed at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Tom Lees completed the move

Lees was connected with League Two club Harrogate Town, but will instead play in League One with Peterborough this season.

After putting pen to paper, he stated: “One of the primary reasons I agreed to come to this club is the manager, Darren Ferguson.

“I’ve played against his teams for many years, and even when I came into the training ground and saw pictures of the teams he’s managed, it was clear that they’d been successful and extremely competitive for a long time.”

“Everybody I spoke to in football, when I was in contact with the gaffer, said I should take advantage of the opportunity to work with him.”

“The club has had a lot of success in this league, and looking around, it shows what you can do if you get a good group of hungry players who want to improve and do it in an exciting way, which is something I am looking forward to here because there is a lot of young talent in that dressing room.”

“I’ve played a lot of football in my career, but at this stage, I want to enjoy it, and the style that Peterborough is known for is extremely appealing.

“In recent years, the club has achieved great success; they have a style of doing things and a model that other clubs have adopted. There has been a significant turnover in the roster since last season, which in some ways demonstrates that a good job was done with that team, since other clubs have come in and taken some of those individuals.

“That task starts again now, it is a new group but I have already seen that the dressing room is hungry to be successful and speaking to the manager, he has said how desperate he is to be competitive this season, so I know him and the chairman will be trying to make the squad as strong as it can be.”

Darren Ferguson discusses Tom Lee’s capture Ferguson added:

“Tom is a fantastic signing for us. We were seeking for an experienced defender who could step in and aid the team.

“He has spent his entire career playing at a higher level; he came in and trained with us and was outstanding; he fit right in and is exactly what we need.

“He can play in a back three or a back four, has a lot of knowledge, and will set a good example for others in terms of how he practices and plays.

“There was no problem with the medical side of things; we were simply waiting for a second opinion, which we now have. Tom will need to catch up because he hasn’t played in preseason, but he is a fantastic professional and I am forward to work with him.”
