West Brom are “in a better position” to take Tom Fellows action – here’s why

West Bromwich Albion have been encouraged to do everything they can to keep Tom Fellows after Torbjorn Heggem was sold to Italian club Bologna for an estimated £10 million.

Albion have started their 2025-26 season strongly, with victories over Blackburn Rovers and Wrexham, but with two weeks remaining in the summer transfer market, they risk losing their finest players to other clubs.

However, following two consecutive victories, the value of one of their most highly valued players has been clear to supporters, and our West Brom fan analyst feels that the sale of Heggem could keep Fellows at The Hawthorns for longer.

Football League World spoke with our resident West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, who is optimistic that the sale of Heggem will help retain Fellows at the club: “The Heggem deal definitely puts Albion in a much better position to be able to demand a bigger fee than previously would have been expected for Fellows and even being able to keep him this summer in general.”

Callum is aware of the financial pressures that Championship clubs face, and believes that this sale will benefit the club in more than one way: “After Heggem’s gone for £10 million after signing him for just a couple of hundred thousand pounds, that’s definitely going to be a big boost for our PSR situation, whether it’s bringing in more players now or being able to keep our best players such as Fellows.”

“I think coming into the summer the expectation was that Fellows would be one to move on, but it seems that with all the talk about Albion needing to make a major sale that’s instead come in the form of Heggem rather than Fellows, and I think if you did ask Albion fans, they’d probably be inclined to think we’d rather sell Heggem than Fellows,” Callum says, acknowledging that West Brom had to make a big player sale this summer in order to balance their books.

Callum does not believe Albion should react positively to Heggem’s sale by using it as an opportunity to tie Fellows down to the club on a longer-term contract: “Hopefully, we do offer Fellows a new contract and tie him down for even longer than his current deal; I believe it is until the end of next season. However, Albion are now in a stronger position to retain individuals like Fellows.

With prior PSR troubles, West Brom required a major player sale this summer

As a Championship club that does not get Premier League parachute payments, West Brom must be careful with their expenditure, and the selling of its higher-profile players benefits the club in a variety of ways.

Fellows’ attention has been piqued by another of the Championship’s long-running summer transfer sagas. Everton have been connected with the winger prior to this transfer window, but they are also looking to sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton. Southampton were allegedly interested in Fellows as a potential Dibling replacement if he moved to Merseyside this summer.
