Barry Bannan spearheads Sheffield Wednesday change as Henrik Pedersen makes squad decision

Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have been interacting with the U18 squad, which may indicate a club decision this season

Sheffield Wednesday has been plagued with troubles this summer, both on and off the field.

The reign of Dejphon Chansiri has been widely criticised, and Sheffield Wednesday fans have since organized protests against the Thai owner, the most recent of which saw supporters walk through Hillsborough Park carrying a coffin.

One of the main concerns in S6 this summer has been the large departure of first-team players, with several Sheffield Wednesday stars leaving for free or for significantly less than their market value.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently forbidden from making transactions until Chansiri can demonstrate to the EFL that he has the finances to pay wages, and as a result, as expected by the owner, Henrik Pedersen will most likely continue to deploy younger players.

Pedersen has already pushed numerous young players into the deep end in the current conditions, and the club’s most recent measures indicate that this may continue.

According to the club website, both Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have given speeches to the current U18 side.

This follows Henrik Pedersen’s determination to bring ‘the academy and first team to be much closer together’, a decision made amid the club’s present challenges in bringing in new players.

Speaking about the adjustments and the talk provided by Bannan and Palmer, recently appointed Sheffield Wednesday U18 coach Jordan Broadbent stated: “We talk a lot about culture and the behaviours we expect from the players; we’re not just here to develop footballers, we’re here to grow people.

“I spoke with Henrik, and he wants the academy and first team to be much closer together. On the Friday before we traveled to Cardiff with the 18s, Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan came and gave a group address to our Under-18s.

Sheffield Several young players were given first-team experience during Wednesday’s cup trip to Bolton Wanderers, and the EFL Cup second round match against Leeds United is anticipated to provide another opportunity.

What Jordan Broadbent has stated about ‘role models’ Barry Bannan & Liam Palmer

When it comes to strengthening the relationship between the U18s and the first team, there are few better players to turn to than the seasoned Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer.

The Owls pair have been through thick and thin while wearing Sheffield Wednesday’s famed white and blue, and U18 boss Jordan Broadbent recognises the great impact they can have on the younger levels.

“I just thought for our boys to hear from them, two players who live and breathe this club and the amount of appearances they have – I can’t thank them enough,” Broadbent told the press.

“We talk about how difficult it is for our guys to go and play for this club once; between Baz and Palms, they’ve done it almost 900 times! We discuss discipline, motivation, standards, and what we do off the field, and having those men as role models for the players is crucial.”
