Birmingham City and Burnley edged by surprise Championship side in key stat after ‘outstanding’ display
One Championship club has shown just how key keeping clean sheets is after topping the table for number of games without conceding in 2025.
Birmingham City were promoted from League One with a record points tally of 111 last term. Their 21 clean sheets kept were vital to that title winning campaign and goalkeeper Ryan Allsop secured the Golden Glove award as a result. Now, pundits think Chris Davies needs more strikers to take the next step.
Meanwhile, Scott Parker’s Burnley went up in the automatic spots from the second tier to the Premier League in April. The Clarets also showed how key keeping tight at the back is after going 1000 minutes without conceding that season. They also kept 11 league clean sheets in a row, becoming the first team in Championship history.
But it’s a side that came up from League One last season that have managed the most league games without conceding this calendar year now the 2025/26 campaign has begun.
Charlton have kept the most clean sheets in 2025
It’s Championship returners Charlton that have managed the most clean sheets this season, keeping 16 in total.
The Addicks won promotion via the League One play-offs in May and haven’t conceded in the league in their first two outings in the second tier, beating Watford 1-0 before drawing 0-0 at Bristol City.
The south London club didn’t concede throughout their entire play-off campaign either, securing 1-0 wins over Wycombe in the semi-final before beating Leyton Orient 1-0 at Wembley.
Former Charlton captain Johnnie Jackson’s Wimbledon are close behind on 15 after their opening victory against Lincoln City. Burnley are level with the Wombles, while Birmingham come in fourth with 13 clean sheets.
| A Nathan Jones side is always going to prioritise being tight at the back, and it’s key Charlton keep two defenders in particular in order to cement themselves in the second tier. EFL Analysis understands the Addicks are also still ‘looking’ at Japanese defender Shinnosuke Fukuda, too, who can further bolster their options. |
The Welshman’s post-match comments at Bristol City show he’s happy with his team’s defensive work for now, though.
Nathan Jones hailed Charlton’s ‘outstanding’ defensive performance at Bristol City
Bristol City’s 4-1 demolition of Sheffield United felt a distant memory as they were held 0-0 by the Addicks at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
Both sides came close to breaking the deadlock but superb defensive work from Charlton’s back line, namely Kayne Ramsay, kept the Robins at bay.
Jones was full of praise for his defenders after the game, believing City never looked like ‘breaking’ the south Londoners ‘down’.
“It’s a great point, especially after the result they had last week and the talent [Bristol City] have,” Jones told BBC Radio London.

“Defensively we were outstanding and I really felt we were going to win it, I couldn’t see them scoring or breaking us down.
“We’ve adapted to the Championship really quickly, I’m just really disappointed we didn’t get all three points, I loved watching us second half. I’m so proud of us because we have shown we can compete at Championship level now.
