Sverre Nypan joins Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the season.
Middlesbrough leveraged their solid relationship with Manchester City to clinch an eye-catching loan move for midfield sensation Sverre Nypan.
The 18-year-old joins Boro on a season-long loan deal, only a month after joining City from Rosenborg for £12.5 million. City have big hopes for the dynamic midfielder, but consider Boro as the best place for him to grow and learn the English game.
Boro spent time scouting Nypan last season before realizing they were too late, as Premier League and top European clubs recognized his potential. However, Boro and City have had long-standing good relations in recent years, which are thought to stem from Neil Bausor’s friendship with the City Group’s Durham-born managing director of global football, Brian Marwood. Boro were able to persuade the Premier League club to send Nypan to Teesside for a year.

Despite being only 18, Nypan has already made over 70 appearances for Rosenborg after progressing through the youth ranks. Nypan, an attack-minded midfielder, appears to be physically strong for his age and can play farther up the pitch, having established a reputation for scoring in and around the box.
Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, stated after signing Nypan last month: “Sverre is an exciting young talent that the Club has been monitoring for quite some time already. We believe he already possesses various distinguishing characteristics, but that at only 18 years old, he will only continue to improve.
“We believe he will be an important asset for Manchester City in the years to come and we will support him every step of the way in his development.”
Nypan becomes Boro’s fifth summer signing, following the additions of Alfie Jones, Abdoulaye Kante, Callum Brittain, and Sontje Hansen. He will expand Rob Edwards’ options, as he can now play Nypan as a central midfielder as well as one of the forward roles behind the striker. However, after signing a number of flexible players this summer, he hasn’t ruled out changing his structure.
