In pursuit of a new team, a former Portsmouth winger joins former Sunderland and Nottingham Forest players.

John Mousinho is still trying to add players to his team with less than two weeks left in the transfer window.
Adrian Segecic, John Swift, Mark Kosznovszky, Luke Le Roux, Florian Bianchini, and Minhyeok Yang are the six new players Pompey has brought to the team this summer. The right wing is one of several crucial spots that needs more reinforcement, though. In the transfer window, however, one former Blues forward is still hoping to make a move. After being released from Shrewsbury Town at the end of the previous season, David Wheeler has looked to the PFA for assistance in an attempt to further his career.
The 34-year-old is the most recent former Pompey regular to join the PFA-run training camp, which is intended to help out-of-contract players maintain their level of fitness for when teams call. In addition to strength and conditioning workouts, training, and the planned friendlies, the program grants players access to spa and gym facilities. Several previous Fratton Park regulars, including Jordy Hiwula, Tom Davies, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Ben Stevenson, Chris Maguire, Asmir Begovic, and Ellis Harrison, have used the 10-week program thus far this summer. Swift also used the course in the summer before returning to Pompey in June.
41 other free agents, including former Barcelona and Sunderland forward Fabio Borini, former Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga, Patrick Bauer, Macaulay Bonne, and Yanic Wildschut, join Wheeler in week eight of the program. After his short-term contract with Shrewsbury ended at the end of the previous season, the winger hopes to continue his career. In an attempt to save Salop from relegation, the seasoned forward completed a free transfer to Croud Meadow after leaving Wycombe Wanderers in February.
But even with former Pompey manager Michael Appleton’s coaching, Shrewsbury finished the season 14 points from safety at the bottom of the League One standings. Wheeler was released in May along with eight other first-team players after failing to score or provide an assist in any of his ten games for the Shropshire club. The Exeter City youth graduate was signed by Kenny Jackett on a season-long loan in August 2018 following a challenging debut season with QPR.
However, given Jamal Lowe’s stellar season debut, Wheeler would have a difficult time making appearances. As a result, the winger only made 18 appearances in all competitions, including one start in League One. His loan agreement was abruptly terminated in January 2019 when the Hoops used his recall option and transferred him directly to League Two team MK Dons, despite the fact that he only managed three goals during his time at Fratton Park.
