Gus Hamer’s Sheffield United transfer stance as Ruben Selles makes honest admission over key man

Gus Hamer’s Sheffield United transfer stance as Ruben Selles makes key admission over Blades’ best player

With less than a fortnight until the summer transfer market closes, Gustavo Hamer is not actively looking for a move away from Sheffield United. However, this does not imply that he will remain at Bramall Lane when the clock strikes 7 p.m. on September 1.

Hamer, named the Championship’s best player last season as United narrowly failed to reclaim their place in the Premier League at the first attempt, has been redeployed in a more central role this time around by new manager Ruben Selles, but he cut a frustrated figure in Saturday’s defeat at Swansea City, having only 30 touches of the ball.

Just days before, he had demonstrated his tremendous talent with a ludicrous halfway-line strike in a defeat to Birmingham City, emphasizing his importance to the Blades’ cause. But no one scores goals like that on the sidelines, especially with transfer rumors circling all summer.

Leeds United has long been interested in him, with their county rivals making an audacious approach to capture him last summer after taking Jayden Bogle up the M1 for a reduced fee. But the main issue for United will be any interest from Hamer’s new country, the Netherlands.

Sources close to the 28-year-old, who was born in Brazil but reared in the Netherlands, have spoken of personal circumstances that make a move to the Eredivisie very intriguing.

If interest from the Netherlands does not materialise – PSV Eindhoven has previously stated that they are monitoring his status in South Yorkshire – Hamer is thought to be satisfied at United and will not actively seek to transfer elsewhere before the deadline.

That does not rule out the possibility that he will leave if the Blades receive a bid they believe is too good to turn down for a player two years into an initial four-year contract, but it will strengthen their resolve to keep hold of a player regarded by many as critical to their chances of making a promotion push this season despite their poor start.

Hamer, who played a major role in United’s journey to the play-off final last season from a free role on the left, has played more centrally this season but has yet to reach the heights of 2024/25, except from that moment of magic at St. Andrew’s last midweek.

When asked if United were getting the best of Hamer in his new role, Selles admitted: “I don’t think we’re getting the best of anyone right now, including myself. Gustavo is clearly one of the players in that equation.

“If we were getting the most out of our guys, we probably wouldn’t be discussing it now. I believe it’s a learning process; he’s at a position in the middle of the pitch where he should be able to provide us with situations, which he did until a week ago and in the most recent game [against Birmingham].
