Sunderland has spent more than £100 million during the summer season, but they want more.
Sunderland has spent more than £142 million during the current transfer window, but they are still looking to make some big acquisitions.
Despite Daniel Ballard’s (25) recent great performance in a 3-0 victory over West Ham, the Black Cats want to add another centre-back to their squad.
And not to compete with Ballard, but rather to work alongside him.
On the opening weekend of the Premier League, Jenson Seelt (22) paired Dan on the left side despite being right-footed, before being replaced by Omar Alderete (28), who is left-footed.
Sunderland looks to be looking to sign another left-footed centre-back to compete alongside Alderete.
Sunderland offers a £54,000-per-week contract to Juventus and Leeds United target
According to Il Resto del Carlino, Sunderland has offered Jhon Lucumi, a 27-year-old centre-back from Bologna, a deal of €3 million each season, or approximately £2.59 million (£54k per week).
According to the referenced source, the Colombian presently makes €800,000 per year (roughly £692.6k), therefore the rise in wages would be enormous if he made the move to the Premier League.
Il Resto del Carlino further states that the choice is entirely up to Bologna’s board, with Lucumi planning to accept Sunderland’s offer.

The Serie A club is resistant because if Jhon leaves, they will have to rely on an entirely different centre-back partnership, having recently sold Sam Beukema (26 to Napoli).
Although Sunderland has already offered Lucumi’s release clause, Bologna has yet to accept the offer. We will see if we receive any more concrete updates in the following days.
Jhon Lucumi has also been connected with clubs such as Juventus and Inter Milan this summer, as well as fellow recently promoted Premier League club Leeds United.
