Régis Le Bris delivers verdict on Sunderland defeat and issues early Dan Ballard injury update

Sunderland suffered a 2-0 defeat against Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon.

Régis Le Bris lamented Sunderland’s lack of clinical finishing in their defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor. The Black Cats missed a pair of critical early scoring opportunities through Eliezer Mayenda and Chemsdine Talbi, and were penalized just after halftime when Josh Cullen opened the scoring.

Sunderland struggled to produce chances after that, with Jaidon Anthony scoring the second right before stoppage time. Le Bris was satisfied with several parts of the first half performance, but he emphasized the significance of taking chances.

“I am disappointed because we got off to a good start, and we dominated the first half,” Le Bris said. “We created two chances and were in our game plan.”

“But we made a small mistake at the start of the second one and gave up this goal, and then the game entirely changed. They went into their back five, four-one, deep, well-organized, aggressive block, and we had trouble finding the right tempo and rhythm to create chances. In that situation, when you are a little sloppy but not accurate enough, I think it’s really obvious that you will concede counter-attacks, and that was the story of the second goal.”

“Fine margins, and if you score early, because it was possible today, I think the scenario changed completely, and for us it would have been the best option, and we created this chance, so it’s positive, I think, because sometimes you don’t create anything,” said the player.

Given the amount of upheaval in the team this summer, Le Bris stated he wasn’t too concerned about the lack of inventiveness in the second half.

He said: “Not at the moment, because we know that this problem is extremely difficult to solve, so it’s not about us; it’s about, I believe, every team in the league, so when you face a well-organized block like that, you probably need better references, shared references, a better culture, and we’re still in construction and work in progress for our team, so we started with eight or nine new players, so this situation is probably the most complicated, so I’m not too concerned. I just know we need to improve this part.”

Régis Le Bris offers an early Dan Ballard injury update. Dan Ballard suffered an early groin injury, which hampered Sunderland.

Le Bris said it was too early to estimate the damage, but he believed it was a significant impact in the game. “Yeah, especially against direct play like that,” Le Bris replied.

“When we pressed high, they went long all the time, and Ballard is usually essential in that case, so we’ll wait until Monday for a diagnosis. “I’m not sure how serious it is yet.”
