Charlton Athletic pulled off a stunning move in signing Bulgarian workhorse Radostin Kishishev for £300,000.
Bulgarian defensive midfielder Kishishev joined Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2000 and left as a cult legend.
The midfielder made just under 200 appearances for the Addicks and will be remembered for his rough and belligerent character, as well as his work-horse mentality, which he instilled in Charlton fans during his seven-year tenure at the Valley.
Kishishev joined Charlton from Litets Lovech for an initial £300,000 on a four-year contract and instantly won the hearts of everyone at the Valley with his die-hard style of play and willingness to give his all for the badge on the pitch.
Kishishev was not only a Charlton fan favourite, but he also had extensive international and club experience. He was an important member of the Bulgarian squads in both Euro 1996 and the France World Cup in 1998, and he went on to play 88 times for his country.
His signing was part of former Addicks manager Alan Curbishley’s strategy for a return to the Premier League. He was brought in as part of a trio of star acquisitions that featured striker Jonatan Johansson and Claus Jensen, who later became a fan favourite.
Alan Curbishley revealed a hidden gem in Radostin Kishishev

Kishishev, who joined Charlton from his own country, began his career as a right-back and was recognized for his versatility and dynamism in broad areas. Curbishley, on the other hand, had different plans for the Bulgarian’s future in England, moving him to midfield, where he flourished in Red and White.
The warrior midfielder quickly established himself as a fixture in Charlton’s starting lineup and was seen as irreplaceable owing to his reputation as a workhorse, as evidenced by the distance he ran in games.
Despite playing nearly 200 games, Kishishev’s specialty were on the defensive side of the game; even when he moved up the pitch to midfield, the Bulgarian only scored two goals for the Addicks, but they were significant.

His best moments for Charlton came in the 2002/03 Premier League season, when they defeated Everton 2-1 owing to Kishishev’s early goal. His other goal came in a 4-2 win over West Ham, when his 90th-minute right-footed strike knocked the Addicks out of the game.
Although goals and attacking returns were not the focus of the tackling midfielder, he will be remembered for his lengthy commitment to the club, which guided the Addicks during a successful period.
The Bulgarian has previously played for Brighton, Leeds, and Leicester, but his tenure in South-East London has made him most well-known.
After seven excellent years with the club, he has undoubtedly established himself as one of Charlton Athletic’s most cost-effective signings in history.
