Virgil van Dijk makes ‘strange’ comment after Anthony Gordon Newcastle United red card

Following Anthony Gordon’s red card for Newcastle United, Virgil van Dijk makes a “strange” remark.

“Strange” is how Virgil van Dijk describes the need for referee Simon Hooper to examine his pitch-side VAR monitor to see if Anthony Gordon’s challenge on him resulted in a red card.
Ten men Despite a valiant effort, Newcastle United lost to Premier League winners Liverpool, who scored in the hundredth minute to win 3-2 and sentence the Magpies to their first defeat of the year. After Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula had pulled Newcastle back into the match, Rio Ngumoha, 16, scored late for the Reds. Hugo Ekitike and Ryan Gravenberch also scored for Arne Slot’s team. The Magpies worked hard, particularly in the second half, but if Gordon had remained on the pitch rather than being sent off, they could have had a better chance of winning the match.
After catching Van Dijk late on the back of the calf in first-half stoppage time, former Everton attacker Gordon was given the boot. Gordon received a yellow card at first, but after rewatching the incident on his pitchside monitor, Hooper quickly upgraded it to a red card. Van Dijk was shocked to learn that Hooper had given a yellow card in real time when he delivered his decision on the red card. “I told him, ‘I don’t understand football if this isn’t a sending off,'” Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

“The referee having to go to the monitor struck me as odd enough already. Sadly, terrible incidents occur in football. It happened whether he intended it or not. We proceed. That’s all.” Gordon apologised to the Newcastle supporters for his dismissal in a statement shortly after the game ended. “I want to sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans,” he said. “I had good intentions. I mistimed the tackle while attempting to infuse the game with energy.

“I also want to apologise to Virgil; I never intended to intentionally tackle someone like this. He is aware that we spoke afterwards. More significantly, I’m really proud of the time I spent playing and the way we performed tonight. “What makes SJP (St. James’ Park) so unique is the environment created by all of you. Right now, more than anything else, I like all that our club stands for. Like every single setback I’ve experienced, I’ll bounce back stronger. I’ll see you shortly.
