Sheffield United signed Tom Cannon in January for £10m, and it’s been far from a success story since then, with no sign of improving this season.
Sheffield United’s start to the season has been abysmal. Just a year on from their play-off final defeat to Sunderland, SUFC sit bottom of the Championship table with three losses out of three.
Ruben Selles was appointed as Chris Wilder’s successor this summer, and it’s been a nightmare start for the former Hull City manager. Not only have the Blades failed to pick up any points, but they were also eliminated in the first round of the Carabao Cup by Birmingham City.

Selles’ side’s last game was against Millwall on Saturday, where, despite an improved second-half performance, they still looked sub-par. The new man at the helm isn’t the only one struggling to adapt to life at Bramall Lane, as Tom Cannon was jeered as he left the field after 60 minutes at the weekend.
Since he arrived from Leicester City at the start of the year for a fee of £10m, Cannon has scored just once in 20 league appearances. The 22-year-old had lit up the Championship in the first half of last campaign, notching 11 goals in 25 games for Stoke City while on loan.
The Everton academy graduate failed to break through to the Toffees’ first-team, and after an initial successful loan stint at Preston, moved to Leicester City. Despite a couple of positive short spells, Cannon has yet to find his feet for Sheffield United, and the move so far has noot gone as planned.
Tom Cannon has not performed at Sheffield United
Since January, Cannon has only started nine times in the league for Sheffield United and been substituted on 11 occasions. The frontman must be frustrated at his lack of opportunities, given the run of form he was on when he first arrived at Bramall Lane.
Selles played the 22-year-old in right wing in his first start of the season last weekend, which is not the striker’s natural position. Whilst the Englishman has not performed, SUFC haven’t managed the player appropriately at all.
The Blades are struggling at the moment and are potentially still suffering from their loss in the play-off final. Cannon has to improve quickly if he is to have a future for Sheffield United.
Sheffield United will not want a repeat of Rhian Brewster’s stint
If Sheffield United are to cut their losses with Cannon and try and sell the striker, the Blades must aim to recoup some of the money spent to ease the disappointment.
SUFC will not want a repeat of the failed £23.5m transfer of Rhian Brewster in 2021. The 25-year-old scored nine goals in 119 appearances and joined Derby County this summer on a free transfer.
The Blades’ overall track record of spending money isn’t awful, but the signing of Cannon for £10m looks to be one in the same category as Brewster, unless he can reignite some of the form he sustained whilst on loan at Stoke City and Preston.
