Ipswich Town should look to hijack Rangers transfer swoop for Everton striker

Ipswich Town ought to try to snare Rangers’ attempt to acquire an Everton striker.

After scoring 11 goals and dishing out four assists in 35 La Liga games the previous season, Barry was acquired this summer for a reported £27 million from Spanish club Villarreal. He will compete with Beto in the striking department. According to the Daily Mail, Rangers and Everton are negotiating a potential loan agreement for Chermiti, who was acquired by the Toffees two years ago for a reputed £15 million. With draws in their first three league games against Motherwell, Dundee, and St. Mirren, the Gers have had a dismal start to life under new manager Russell Martin.

Additionally, they lost the match 9-1 overall and were eliminated from Champions League qualification after suffering a crushing 6-0 loss on the road to Belgian team Club Brugge on Wednesday night. Only a few weeks into his job, Martin is already under a lot of pressure, and it has been stated that he has looked to Chermiti of Everton to increase their attacking options before the deadline. Ipswich Town, a Championship team, should be on high alert and try to sign the Portuguese forward before the Scottish team does, given the reports of Rangers’ interest in him.

The club’s only first-team strikers at the moment are George Hirst and Ali-Al Hamadi; the latter recently sustained a calf injury, and it is unknown when the Iraqi international will return. Hirst is now the sole striker for the team. While Chuba Akpom’s acquisition gives them cover, manager Kieran McKenna probably sees Akpom as a number ten to provide competition for Sammie Szmodics. Chermiti, who is six feet four inches tall, definitely fits McKenna’s preference for dynamic strikers with a larger build. In recent seasons, McKenna has added players like Liam Delap and Kieffer Moore to help up top.

A loan agreement would provide Ipswich a low-risk, short-term opportunity to compete at the top as they want to return to the Premier League with an instant promotion after their disastrous relegation the previous season. With just four appearances and 42 minutes in all competitions last season, Chermiti has struggled to make any kind of impact in the first-team squad in his two years as an Evertonian. He has played just 24 times without scoring in all competitions since joining the Toffees. Chermiti is left out in the cold once more, and a move away from the club—likely a loan deal—seems inevitable before the window shuts because Beto and Barry Moyes’ first two alternatives are in the only striking position.

With two years left on his present contract at Hill Dickinson Stadium, the Portuguese Under-21 international could yet earn a new contract and challenge Beto and Barry for a starting spot at Everton if he performs well on loan. Chermiti may be the ideal candidate for a loan move to McKenna’s Ipswich, where he will undoubtedly get more playing time in the Championship and provide Hirst and Al-Hamadi with tough competition once the latter is well again.
