Derby County plotting transfer reunion with Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts on permanent deal

Derby County is planning a permanent reunion with Patrick Roberts, a winger for Sunderland.

Due to the Black Cats’ return to the Premier League following an eight-year hiatus, manager Regis Le Bris has a lot on his plate during the summer transfer window. Sunderland made some wise acquisitions early in this transfer window in anticipation of their move to the Premier League, including the tricky winger Chemsdine Talbi from Club Brugge, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, a Premier League veteran, and former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Unsurprisingly, Sunderland’s aggressive transfer window strategy, supported by significant expenditures, is Le Bris’ declaration of intent to retain them in the Premier League. The Black Cats have had an outstanding start to the season, winning two of their first three games. Well-established Mackems players like Roberts have been worried about their future at the club and whether they will play many minutes in the Premier League given the influx of new players. This summer, a number of Championship teams have expressed interest in the winger, with Derby County expressing the strongest interest.

Journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that Derby County is very interested in signing Patrick Roberts, a winger for Sunderland. Even though the Black Cats promoted Roberts, the 28-year-old hasn’t played much; he just entered the game for the final 30 minutes against Burnley and hasn’t been used as a substitute. Derby County, who lost out on former target Koki Saito, who permanently returned to QPR, is particularly interested in this as a player of his calibre is sitting on the bench.

According to Nixon, if the Mackems sell Roberts for a fair amount, the Rams would offer him a three-year contract as part of their efforts to reach an agreement with Sunderland. Since injuries have been common in the early going of the season, with Corey Blackett-Taylor out for some time, Derby manager John Eustace has made it clear over the summer that adding attacking reinforcements is a top priority. Roberts has demonstrated Championship expertise, and when combined with his ability to coordinate attacks, he might be a thrilling addition to Pride Park.

Even though they had a sluggish start to the season, their new star player, Carlton Morris, is currently playing at his best, and there have been obvious glimpses of potential in the forward areas. When Roberts is included, this may become a hazardous front line for defences to contend with. Roberts contributed two goals and eight assists during Sunderland’s promotion run, and since Eustace is in dire need of a creative wide player who can both play complex passes between the lines and get crosses into the box, he might be the ideal addition to Derby’s roster.

The Pride Park supporters would undoubtedly welcome the 28-year-old back if he were to return down south after his one-season loan stint with the Rams in 2020–21. During that season, Roberts made 15 league appearances, recording one goal and one assist. Because of his extensive expertise, he would quickly become a staple in the Midlands and would be crucial to helping the Rams move up the table as they try to start the season off right.
