‘Talks held’ for a homegrown player with Premier League experience as Wolves’ failed approach may finally come to an end

According to reports, Wolverhampton Wanderers are open to negotiate a deal for a midfield player who has played in 111 Premier League games.
In the top tier, Vitor Pereira’s team has lost three straight games to Manchester City, Bournemouth, and Everton, respectively, to begin the new season. Five players who have never played a minute of Premier League football have joined the first team, despite the West Midlands squad’s recent additions. The sixth is expected to arrive in the form of Tolu Arokodare, a forward from Genk who might eventually replace Jorgen Strand Larsen should Wolves soften their position about the availability of the Norway international.
Because of this, it seems reasonable to criticise the new Wolves recruitment squad. They currently only have two English players in their senior ranks: Irishman Matt Doherty and backup goalkeepers Sam Johnstone and Dan Bentley. It is obvious that another domestic player may add much-needed nous to the team, but it also raises the possibility of problems with the homegrown registration requirements. Wolves have reportedly discussed the possibility of signing Josh Brownhill, a former Burnley midfielder, according to Sky Sports News.
After shining in Burnley’s 2024–25 promotion campaign, the 29-year-old decided to embark on a new challenge, ending his six-year tenure at Turf Moor. Over the course of his career, Brownhill has made 111 appearances in the Premier League, contributing 18 goals and six assists in 42 games. Over the summer, he has been weighing his options, and according to the aforementioned rumour, he has received a sizable offer from the Saudi Arabian team Al Shabab.
Brownhill must thus essentially choose between staying in the Premier League and taking advantage of a chance elsewhere, given that this could end up being his last big contract while he is ostensibly at the top of his game. Although Brownhill’s Premier League record will raise some concerns, the majority of Wolves supporters would be happy to see him join the team. After losing several key players this summer, Wolves took too many chances in the transfer market, and it’s already showing.
Their next four games are crucial ones that could determine how the rest of the season plays out: Brighton & Hove Albion (home), Leeds United (away), Tottenham Hotspur (away), and Newcastle United (away). With Joao Gomes exposed and Andre and Jean-Ricner Bellegrade both underperforming in the first few weeks of the season, Brownhill might give Wolves’ engine room a lift.
