Exclusive: Barnsley star Adam Phillips is the target of Luton Town’s transfer bid

Following their consecutive relegations from the Premier League to the third division of English football, the Hatters have been adjusting to life in League One. However, head coach Matt Bloomfield has not had an easy time with his team, as they have already lost twice in their first six games. This summer, Kenilworth Road has welcomed ten new players, including Kal Naismith, who is returning. Town isn’t done yet, as they plan to raid a League One opponent for one of their best players.
According to FLW, Luton has moved to sign Barnsley midfielder Adam Phillips before the transfer deadline of 7 p.m. on Monday. Bloomfield has strengthened his team at most areas this summer, but he has been missing an attacking midfield player. According to FLW’s sources, Phillips may be the answer to Town’s void created by Tahith Chong’s departure for Sheffield United, with an offer for his services on the table.
The 27-year-old Phillips joined Barnsley from Burnley in 2022 after spending time on loan at Morecambe and Accrington Stanley. Over the past three whole seasons, Phillips has excelled for the South Yorkshire team in League One and established himself as a reliable midfield scorer. In his first season at Oakwell, he scored eight league goals and provided nine assists. In 2023–24, he improved on that with 11 goals and six assists.
Phillips continued his excellent third-tier play last season, scoring nine goals in League One and setting up seven more for his teammates. He has been a member of a Barnsley team that has won four of their first six games in 2025–26 and is currently in fourth place, ahead of Luton. Despite having a club option that, if exercised, would keep him on the books until 2027, Phillips has less than a year left on his Barnsley contract. As a result, Luton will need to present an alluring offer to persuade their divisional rivals to let go of one of their most important players.
