Sheffield Wednesday facing monster blow in EFL sanction latest

Sheffield Wednesday remain unable to make any new signings with less than two days to go until the end of the transfer window, The Star understands.

The Owls were placed under recruitment penalties many weeks ago, rendering them unable to register new players due to a repeated failure to meet fundamental financial responsibilities over a disastrous summer. The EFL’s independent Club Financial Reporting Unit (CFRU) was in near-constant touch with authorities on Wednesday to ascertain their ongoing financial forecast, and decisions were made on what business, if any, could be responsibly permitted.

Manager Henrik Pedersen has made no secret of the need of adding to an already thin squad, and after Saturday’s courageous defeat to Swansea City, he told the media that he was waiting for confirmation from the EFL on whether limits would be removed. It is understood that the restrictions remain in place as of Sunday morning.

Discussions between the two parties are anticipated to continue and if the required financial assurances are offered, it’s understood Wednesday have a few of targets lined up behind the scenes. The current understanding is that it is up to the Wednesday hierarchy to assure the CFRU that they can meet their financial obligations in the coming months. At the time of writing, it appears they have been unable to do so.

The transfer window ends at 7 p.m. on Monday, which, unless limitations are loosened, would rule out the possibility of any loan signings on Wednesday. Free agents are among the prospective signings the club has explored, and if their restrictions are lifted shortly after the deadline, they may still be brought on board. As things stand, the Owls will not be able to make any transfer signings until the summer of 2027.

In the late stages of the transfer window, it is understood that some Wednesday players are being pursued by other clubs, with The Star reporting rejected bids from Sheffield United and Blackburn Rovers for striker Bailey Cadamarteri. Goalkeeper Pierce Charles is still being pursued, but his shoulder injury appears to be preventing immediate approaches.

It is understood that the Owls are not planning to offload any more players following a summer of squad destruction. Pedersen has made it clear that he hopes to keep the rest of his squad intact, however he has recognized that the final decision will not be his as Wednesday continues to struggle financially.
