Women’s report | Rugby 2-3 Wolves

Women’s report | Wolves vs. Rugby

Wolves Women’s resolute victory over Rugby Borough on Sunday afternoon continued their undefeated start to the season.

Despite a late comeback by the hosts and two attempts from Lily Greenslade, Wolves secured three points thanks to a brace from Amber Hughes and a strong goal from Amy Sims. Wolves had the better start and had early chances through Beth Merrick and Hughes, but they were unable to break the tie in the close match at Kilsby Lane. After preventing Sofia Mallon from giving Rugby the lead with a fingertip save in the 34th minute, Alex Brookes was called upon. Five minutes before halftime, Hughes headed over Nyla Peterkin after Louanne Worsey’s cross to the back post gave Wolves the lead.

Soon after the restart, Hughes doubled Wolves’ lead by stretching to get on the end of an inviting cross from Katie Johnson, earning her second goal of the afternoon. After the visitors took a lead thanks to that second goal, Wolves were able to manipulate the match to their liking by making substitutes. With just over 20 minutes remaining, Sims’ incredible goal put Dan McNamara’s team up three. Her attempt soared off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net after a brief one-two with Rowsey.

Greenslade scored twice as the home team applied more pressure in the closing minutes of the match, despite Wolves’ easy possession, but McNamara’s team did well to defend and win.
