Rumoured Reading FC target confirms Wycombe Wanderers exit

Rumoured Reading FC target confirms Wycombe Wanderers exit.

Despite making more than 200 appearances for the Chairboys, the 38-year-old has not played for the struggling

team this season.

After a contentious departure from the SCL Stadium in 2020, after making more than 250 appearances in eight

years as a Royal, he moved to Buckinghamshire.

McCleary, one of up to six wingers in the squad, including Matt Ritchie, left a mixed impact with RG2 supporters

after making appearances in the Premier League and scoring in an FA Cup semi-final.

Head coach Mike Dodds said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with Garath during my time at the club, and I know he’s

been a really influential character on and off the pitch ever since he arrived. I know I speak on behalf of everyone at

the club when I say that I thank him for his outstanding service to Wycombe Wanderers and wish him luck in

whatever comes next.”

“He’s been a fantastic professional and a role model for other players, and always applied himself superbly day in,

day out, which is why he’s continued to enjoy a successful career long into his 30s and he’ll have plenty to offer his

next club when the time comes.”

The winger is currently being linked to returning to Berkshire to play for old colleagues Mikele Leigertwood and Noel

Hunt.

He played in 43 of the 46 regular League One games last season, contributing four goals and six assists, despite the

fact that his age worries some fans.

A contract would not have to be finalised by this evening’s 7 p.m. deadline because he is now a free agent, although it

is believed that a deal is being worked on all day.

Last week, when the two teams drew 2-2, Jamaican McCleary was given an emotional welcome at Adams Park.
