How Erik ten Hag’s Bayer Leverkusen nightmare could spark domino effect that impacts Ipswich Town

Erik ten Hag has sensationally been sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after two games in charge.

Ten Hag was appointed to replace Xabi Alonso, who departed for Real Madrid, but the former Manchester United boss was unable to get a win after drawing one and losing one.

Speculation about who the 2023/24 Bundesliga champions will turn to has already started and one potential candidate could have a lasting effect on Championship promotion candidates Ipswich Town.

Crystal Palace may turn to Kieran McKenna to replace Oliver Glasner if he joins Bayer Leverkusen

Leverkusen are likely to want a proven winner and someone who fits that bill is Oliver Glasner.

The Austrian won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and guided Crystal Palace to their first ever major trophy after winning the FA Cup.

Glasner has been left frustrated by the lack of activity and with his contract up at the end of the season, that could lead to the Eagles looking at Kieran McKenna.

Kieran McKenna Manager of Ipswich Town looks disappointed

Despite relegation back to the Championship, McKenna is admired by a number of suitors and has credit in the bank after his excellent back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

McKenna was tipped to join Brentford in the summer but with Palace in the Conference League and an array of exciting players at his disposal, the chance to move to south London may be too attractive to turn down if Leverkusen did poach Glasner.

Kieran McKenna keen to improve Ipswich Town’s fortunes

Even though the Northern Irishman would almost certainly be named on Palace’s shortlist of possible Glasner replacements, his first port of call will be to start winning games with the Tractor Boys.

Ipswich are yet to win a game so far, drawing three and losing one of their first four games.

His side claimed a late draw against Derby County last weekend and McKenna hopes that the wins will start coming soon.

He said: “I think whether it’s three points, six points, five points, seven points, it’s been a really, really difficult summer in almost every aspect – certainly by far the most difficult in my time here.

“We come out the back of that period now and we go on to the next chapter. I wouldn’t feel, I don’t think, drastically different if we had five points or six points.”
