Norwich City kept Josh Sargent but failure to sell ‘unbelievable’ outcast will cost them dearly
Given that they had completed all of their signing-related activity before the busiest day of the summer transfer market, Norwich City was possibly the quietest team in the Championship on deadline day.
Although the Canaries had to ward off some interest from Rangers in important players, such as Kenny McLean, Liam Manning will have him and Josh Sargent at his disposal this season.
Despite their justification for the sale, Norwich City supporters could have been furious if the team had allowed more elite players to go Carrow Road this summer after selling Marcelino Nunez to Ipswich Town.
Norwich City will, however, regret the one player they were unable to sign before the transfer deadline.
Norwich City failed to agree an exit for Shane Duffy
Liam Manning has stated that Nottingham City was looking at deals to sign Shane Duffy this summer, either permanently or on loan from Carrow Road.
The Republic of Ireland international is about to enter the last year of his contract, but since he is one of the top paid players at Carrow Road, the team would have hoped to save some money on his salary.
Since he could have played first-team football for the upcoming season, Shane Duffy would regret not signing a loan agreement if he did not want to forfeit the amount of money he would have received from his salaries had he left on a permanent deal.
At the end of the season, if the Boys in Green qualified, Duffy could have pushed his way into the team chosen by Heimir Hallgrímsson for the 2026 World Cup, even if he is currently out of the international reckoning with Ireland.
Stephen Kenny on the Shane Duffy
Under Kenny, his prior focus on improving his form and skills gained him a place back in the Ireland squad. Had he left Norwich City before the World Cup, the player could have done so again.
“He loves playing for Ireland, he is a good character in the squad, and we are lucky to have him,” Kenny told the Irish Sun.
“He intervenes in big moments. We didn’t get over the line against Portugal, it was so close, but it wasn’t his fault.
“He did some unbelievable defending in that game, and he comes up with big goals like the equaliser against Azerbaijan.
“He has definitely shown — long before I was manager, under successive managers — that he possesses a lot of character; certainly under Martin O’Neill and Mick McCarthy he was an important part of their teams. He has shown a lot of character consistently.”
