LIVERPOOL HAVE SIGNED ‘ONE OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD’ AND IT’S NOT ISAK OR WIRTZ

Due in large part to his connections to Manchester United, Peter Schmeichel has rarely been shy to point out

Liverpool’s weaknesses. However, there has been a noticeable change in tone in his recent remarks. His judgement

has actually been more complimentary than critical over the last two seasons, especially when it comes to Liverpool’s

transfer policy and their fluid on-field play.

That shift in perspective mirrors Liverpool’s metamorphosis under Arne Slot. In his first season at Anfield, the Dutch

manager won the Premier League, leading the Reds to victory with a style of play that was merciless and unrelenting.

Liverpool’s 2025 summer transfer window has been nothing short of extraordinary. While Marc Guehi’s move from

Crystal Palace ultimately collapsed, the Reds pressed ahead with a statement summer that saw them spend more

than £400 million. Significant outgoings, including Luis Díaz and Jarell Quansah, softened the financial blow, yet

the focus is firmly on the calibre of those coming in.

The two main newcomers, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, provide Slot more attacking flair, but Schmeichel was
particularly interested in another acquisition. Prior to Liverpool’s match against Arsenal, the former goalie made a
strong statement.

“Arne Slot is attempting to win each and every game.” You win the Premier League that way. Quality must be used to

support it,” Schmeichel told BBC Sport.
Giorgi Mamardashvili, who made a high-profile move from Valencia to Liverpool, was singled out by the Dane.
Schmeichel believes that the acquisition of the Georgian embodies the depth and aspirations of the Anfield team.

“I see quality in every aspect of the Liverpool team. Among the players he has brought in is Giorgi Mamardashvili, a

highly skilled custodian who serves as a backup. That conveys a narrative.

Such statements are significant. The fact that a player who epitomised goalkeeping brilliance throughout the Premier

League era would say such a thing about a Liverpool acquisition shows how highly Mamardashvili is regarded
throughout Europe.
The question is if Liverpool can maintain their dominance at home and carry it over to the European arena as the
2025–26 season progresses. Slot suffered a string of losses at the end of the previous season as a result of opponents
finding ways to take advantage of holes in his system. It seems that the manager’s summer business is set up to
prevent a recurrence of that situation.

The fans of Liverpool won’t settle for merely another title defence. With a team strengthened by Isak, Wirtz, and

Mamardashvili, the Champions League continues to be the final benchmark for Europe’s best. It would be
disappointing if there wasn’t a genuine contest for both big awards.
For now, though, Liverpool look better equipped than ever. If Schmeichel, a Manchester United legend, is willing to
lavish such praise on their recruitment and their goalkeeping depth, then Slot’s Liverpool must be doing something
right.
