Shock Burnley effort to sign Josh Sargent at Norwich City revealed – it’s no wonder this was dismissed

Startle It’s understandable why Burnley’s attempt to sign Josh Sargent at Norwich City was rejected.

Despite having injury problems throughout the previous two seasons, the USA international has scored 16 and 15 goals for the Canaries, solidifying his position as one of the league’s best players. Sargent has maintained that success in the current campaign, scoring five goals in four games to start the season off brilliantly. With numerous clubs in England and throughout Europe reportedly showing interest in the 26-year-old, it is therefore not surprising that there has been a great deal of conjecture regarding his future.

Wolfsburg made a bold move to sign Sargent, but the former Werder Bremen player declined the opportunity to rejoin the Bundesliga even though an offer of up to £20 million was approved for the striker. Journalist Alan Nixon has now disclosed that Burnley attempted to sign Sargent to the Premier League, but the Canaries rejected the newly promoted team’s offer. Remarkably, he asserts that Burnley only made an upfront bid of £1.5 million for Sargent, with “complicated extras” adding up to £10 million.

This is a noteworthy development since, in Norwich’s opinion, a £10 million offer for their finest player would be offensive. The going figure would be approximately £20 million because Sargent has proven his class over the past few years and is unquestionably one of the best players in the Championship. Burnley’s offer is obviously far from that, and given that Sargent is under contract with the Canaries until 2028, they were under no obligation to sell at all—especially as they had paid a hefty sum for Borja Sainz.

After Wolfsburg’s approach, all interested teams knew the sort of sum that would be necessary to do business, so Burnley were definitely trying to sign him on the cheap, but it was never going to happen. To his credit, Sargent hasn’t allowed the transfer talk to distract him this summer, and despite Norwich have had a dismal first four games, the striker has been superb for new boss Liam Manning. The Norfolk team will now aim to move up the table and contend for the play-offs this season with a settled roster, and Sargent will be essential to securing their return to the Premier League.
